Insurance tips for Olim Chadashim and Vatikim
By Errol Melman, Insurance Agent

1) Car Insurance- When you come on Aliyah and wish to purchase car insurance, make sure you bring a letter with you stating your last three years (at least) claims record. This will entitle you to a generous discount. The letter may be from either your insurance company or agent.

2) Home Insurance- Your household goods and effects of your lift should be insured door to door. Once you receive your lift, you should then purchase a regular Homeowner's policy which can cover your personal possessions, valuables and property as well.

3) Life Insurance- Consult with your local agent as to which policies you should be keeping. Please remember that 99% of Non-Israeli policies do NOT cover war and terror risks. If you are told otherwise, insist on a letter from the insurance company, underwriter only.

4) Medical Insurance- Yow will be covered by the health fund (kupat cholim) you join. It is, however, advised to take out private coverage (not very expensive) for medical operations, transplants, etc…

About Errol Melman
I immigrated to Israel from Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1978. I was active in Bnei Akiva and lived in London for four years working as a computer salesman for Honeywell Inc. In London I married Michele. After a six-month absorption center sojourn, we moved to Alon Shevut (just south of Yerushalayim) where we joined my "chevra" from the South Africa Bnei Akiva garin. We are still there today with five (B"H) children.

I started to build up an insurance business after being here for a year, which slowly-slowly developed and prospered. I handle a full range of insurance and have a clientele who is largely Anglo Saxon at source. Appointments can be at my office or in the convenience of your living room in Beit Shemesh (only 20 min. from my home in Alon Shevut.)

My wife Michele is an English teacher who developed her own niche - i.e. she prepares children from English speaking families for the English speakers stream in their initial years in school.

I shall be happy to answer any queries about insurance, or in general.
